HOW DID THE IDEA FOR “CANALETTO” COME ABOUT?
The idea of Canaletto is the result of years of research aimed at creating a system capable of guaranteeing the most important features of a counterceiling.
Our range of solutions has come from the experience and the demands of our present technical manager (craftsman and former business owner) to respond to the various problems encountered during certain projects. Problems which still today are par for the course when creating the perfect counterceiling.

Driven by these demands, the company Canaletto S.r.l., based in Altamura, southern Italy, began commercial production using advanced technology and, together with the collaboration of various professionals, is in a position to operate on a national level. WHY CONSIDER THE CANALETTO SYSTEM?
As owner of a business operating in the interior finishing sector, our Manager has always been on the look out for products which benefit company image and are straightforward to assemble, even if the structure is complex, in order to guarantee brief schedules and appropriate remuneration. This philosophy is fundamental and is put into practice by all craft firms in order to stay competitive and dynamic within the market given the rising costs of labour which are a burden particularly for small and medium-sized companies. The Canaletto system combines all those features which are typical of a top quality product: easy to work with, straightforward to apply, joint resilience, great looking finish. That’s why it merits the attention of all professionals responsible for interior finishing.
WHY INTEGRATE CANALETTO IN A COUNTERCEILING?
If you pay close attention to the area where a counterceiling meets a wall, whether the structure is modular or in plasterboard, you will likely notice many unpleasant imperfections which are not always rectifiable, despite the work having been carried out by trained craftsmen; it is, after all, manual work. Close examination of a modular counterceiling reveals that the perimeter mounted to the wall is unsightly due to the appearance of slits created by waves on the wall or plaster. This ruins the look of the counterceiling and consequently, of the room. In the case of a counterceiling in plasterboard, other imperfections can be noted such as: imprecise edge joining between counterceiling and wall, especially if the wall is a darker colour than the counterceiling; the perimeter line, made with modern techniques, follows all the imperfections of the walls; detachment of the plaster in the area adjacent to the junction between counterceiling and wall. These drawbacks occur due to the lack of a perimeter profile which detaches the movements of the two structures from each other and corrects and perfects the alignment of counterceiling and wall.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
If we analyse laying times for two counterceilings, one made traditionally with a perimeter U guide secured directly to the wall, caulking and reinforcing the edge with perforated paper (and all the difficulty this involves) and the other with the integration of the Canaletto system, we will find that the time required for the creation of a traditional counterceiling is clearly greater than when using Canaletto. In fact Canaletto is an effective response to all questions which are raised in the field of dry construction.
WHAT MATERIAL IS CANALETTO MADE FROM?
Canaletto is made from a material called MDF WATERPROOF “Medium Density Fibreboard”
WHY CHOOSE MDF WATERPROOF?
Having carried out detailed research and careful analysis of many of the materials available today for the creation of a Canaletto profile, we found that the one which achieved the best results both in physical and mechanical laboratory tests turned out to be MDF WATERPROOF.
CAN CANALETTO’S MDF WATERPROOF BE PAINTED?
The material readily lends itself to this type of work; just consider that producers of doors, frames and skirting boards frequently use it to get the best results on varnished finishes. Canaletto also has a white monocomponent water based finish on its inner surface to allow for finishing with any kind of water based paint once the counterceiling has been correctly prepared.
DO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF MDF WATERPROOF VARY OVER TIME?
Given that MDF WATERPROOF is made of resins which make it resistant to humidity, even when exposed to thermal stress, it remains very resistant and retains its resiliency over time.
IS MDF WATERPROOF SUITABLE FOR THE SECURING OF COMPONENTS?
Canaletto was designed with MDF in mind because it gives you the possibility to carry out the entire assembly of the counterceiling in an efficient manner and laboratory tests have demonstrated it to be perfectly adequate for the connection of components by screws. In fact, the creation of a counterceiling requires the securing of elements such as the metallic warping band, made up of the U-perimeter with C-mounts, necessary for its suspension. The thickness of 16mm for the MDF decided on because it offers adequate resilience for the mounting and securing to be carried out on the outer face of the Canaletto while keeping assembly swift and easy for the layer.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NECESSARY FOR ASSEMBLING THE CANALETTO?
To assemble the Canaletto, apart from the basic tools which a plasterboard layer has at his disposition (such as a drill, screwdriver, laser level and other small tools), you will need a small wood saw to cut the profile to your own requirements. This is a minimal investment which will assure perfect edges and 45° corners, details which are very often cause for dispute when making a counterceiling.
WHY USE THE ASSEMBLY KIT?
From the resiliency tests carried out in the laboratory, it was demonstrated that the use of the Canaletto profile assembly kit is a fundamental step towards obtaining maximum reliability as regards holding power and elasticity, as well as guaranteeing the correct positioning alongside the wall. The assembly kit contains accessories such as:
- brackets that position the Canaletto at a perfect angle to the wall;
- connection plates which facilitate the correct continuity of the Profile
- calibrated measure screws which do not damage the visible part of the Canaletto and perfectly perforate both the MDF and the 6mm metallic warping with little difficulty;
- universal screw anchors for securing both on solid and hollow supports;
The contents of the assembly kit covers the requirements for the application of an entire pack of each Canaletto article. This facilitates logistical management both for the retailer and the assembler while avoiding an excess of materials on site.
AT WHAT DISTANCE SHOULD THE BRACKETS BE SECURED?
All Canaletto profile articles have a length of 1,850mm. For a standard assembly, 5 metallic brackets are placed along this length secured by screws, starting at least 40/50mm from the extremity and continuing at intervals of roughly 400mm.
IF THE WALL SHOWS SIGNS OF DEFECTS, CAN THE CANALETTO BE MOUNTED?
Another important characteristic of the Canaletto is that of aligning the counterceiling junction to the wall, even when the plaster is not perfectly smooth. By adjusting the bracket screws, it is possible to carefully regulate alignment to the wall.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CANALETTO’S LATERAL MILLING?
On the external side of the Canaletto there is a milling which is treated with a special gripping material and has two advantages: it acts as a reference point when securing the U-perimeter as well as creating a “filler bed” between the Canaletto and the plasterboard, facilitating application of the perforated paper.
HOW SHOULD THE JOINT BETWEEN THE CANALETTO AND THE PLASTERBOARD BE TREATED?
The joint should simply be treated with the same technique that craftsmen use with all joints for panels in plasterboard. Many assemblers choose netting rather than perforated paper as it’s quick and handy for laying purposes. Nonetheless, tests have shown that perforated paper offers greater resistance under systematic stress. It should be underlined here that the filler used for treatment of the joint can be of any brand, as long as it is a gripping sticky filler with low shrinkage. Bear in mind that most producers of plasterboard panels nowadays also make high quality fillers.
HOW IS THE PLASTERING BETWEEN THE CANALETTO AND THE WALL TO BE CARRIED OUT?
The plastering between the Canaletto and the wall should simply be done using materials which are sufficiently elastic, such as acrylic silicone or light filler. This measure should be adopted even if you opt for the laying procedure in which 4mm biadhesive tape is placed between the Canaletto and the wall, in order to give maximum elasticity to the counterceiling.
IS THE CANALETTO SYSTEM STANDARD?
Absolutely. The Canaletto system has also been designed to synchronise the work of the designer, interior decorator, tradesman and retailer.
